China and the Indian Subcontinent are now connected by the new Indus service and Indian port calls removed from its existing Super Galex service between China and the Middle East. The changes take effect from August 12, 2009.

The new Indus will serve the trade between China and the Indian Sub Continent, including connections with South East Asia at Port Kelang. The direct ports of call will be: Shanghai, Ningbo and Chiwan in China, Port Kelang in South East Asia and Colombo, Nhavasheva, Karachi and Mundra, in the Indian Sub Continent. Inland container depots (ICDs) in India will be served through Mundra and Nhavasheva.

The service is offered in partnership with CMA CGM who will provide one of the five vessels of 2,500/3,000 TEU capacity in a rotation of 35 days.

A spokesperson for the line explained to CI eXpress that the recent deployment of larger vessels on the existing Super Galex service resulted in significantly longer transit times to India, as draft restrictions at Indian ports forced an eastbound call. Hence the logic of a dedicated service with smaller vessels better suited to local port conditions offering competitive transit times and schedule reliability.

Correspondingly the Super Galex has been redesigned as a fully dedicated service to Persian Gulf ports in the Middle East. It will cease calls at the ports of the Indian Sub Continent and will add a direct call to Bandar abbas.

Bandar Abbas is among the top three ports servicing the trade between China and Persian Gulf. 'We see China-Iran trading with optimism,' remarked the liner. Removing Indian port calls will result in improved transit times between China and Persian Gulf. For instance Chiwan to Jebel Ali will be reduced by three days.

'In addition, the seasonal India port congestion element has been removed with the consequent improvement in schedule reliability,' the spokesperson continued. CSAV expects its investment in the new service to be rewarded with higher paying freight and additional cargo volumes.

The weekly service will be operated in partnership with Laurel Navigation who will provide one of the six 6,500 TEU average capacity vessels on a rotation of 42 days. The service will call directly Shanghai, Xingang, Qindao, Ningbo and Chiwan in China, then Port Kelang in South East Asia and Jebel Ali, Dammam and Bandar abbas in Persian Gulf. Cargoes to and from other Persian Gulf ports will continue to be serviced with a connection at Jebel Ali.

The embattled liner is in the process of a USD710 recapitalization program supported by share holders and ship owners to stave off bankruptcy. Earlier this month it successfully completed the first phase of this process, raising USD145 million in a rights issue and selling its 27% holding in port services company Agunsa.

A.CH.Jahan, Container and Logistics Manager of Tidewater Middle East Company (the Terminal Operator) stated: “In the past had been believed that Bandar abbas is not capable to handle such vessels but having completed the first phase of Bandar abbas second Container Terminal, making use of longer and deeper berths, state of art equipments, sufficient yard space , advanced software and well trained manpower in marine and terminal operation, we made it possible to put operation of such vessel in practice”.
Jahan Added: “Recently this port celebrated 2'000'000 TEU in 2008 indicating 16% throughput increase comparing to 2007 and arrival of this vessel was a welcome motivator to Bandar abbas Port and its container terminals which is considered as one of the successful ports in the Persian Gulf in this period of world trade crisis.”
The MSC Beatrice as the largest declared capacity of any container vessel in service is deployed in the Silk Service, one of MSC's two Fareast – North Europe services.

The CMA CGM-CIMEX and CSCL-AMA services, which featured vessels of 3,000-5,700 TEU, will be replaced on 8 July by a joint CIMEX product offering additional port calls using six 8,500teu vessels.
The carriers claimed the move would not add any capacity to a trade which they predicted would continue to enjoy healthy growth.
CMA CGM said CIMEX would be the only Asia-Middle East service which called at four ports in the Gulf.
The new CIMEX rotation is: Tianjin, Dalian, Pusan, Shanghai (Yangshan), Shanghai (Waigaoqiao), Ningbo, Shekou, Port Kelang, KhorFakkan, Jebel Ali, Dammam, Bandar abbas, Port Kelang, Nansha and Tianjin.

The deal calls for the exchange of information and co-operation in many areas, including in sectors such as ship and port security, safety, pollution control and training.

In addition, it is hoped that the deal will foster an increase in seaborne trade between the nations. To help promote this aspect of the agreement, Shahid Rajaee (Bandar Abbas) and Abidjan - which are among the leading ports in Iran and Cote d'Ivoire, respectively - have signed up to a sister port deal.

Management at both ports will look at ways of encouraging regular and direct services between the two nations with container links thought to be among the priorities.

In 2008, Bandar Abbas and Abidjan both registered strong rates of growth in their box throughputs rising by 16% and 26% respectively. While Bandar Abbas broke the two million TEU milestone for the first time last year, Abidjan's volumes surpassed 564,000TEU.

More than anything else, we do appreciate the respect and their trust in our services.'
Jahan continued: 'Having got competitive rates and a new regular feeder connection to Bahrain and Kuwait, we should be able to make Bandar abbas a good transhipment hub for Persian Gulf region for ocean carriers.'
